Tenn. Firefighters Call Off Search For Teens in Ditch

Memphis firefighters ended a search for teens who may have come stuck in a drainage ditch during a storm.

June 13--After an extensive search Thursday night and a follow-up Friday morning, firefighters called off the search for teens who had been reported in a rain-swollen East Memphis drainage ditch.

Initially a witness said as many as four teens were playing in the rising waters, but another said the teens were clinging to a tree branch.

Memphis Fire Department spokesman Lt. Wayne Cooke said Friday it's possible the teens got out of the rushing waters on their own.

Search crews checked from the location where the teens were spotted, near 4833 Hilldale, to where Harrison Creek drains into the Wolf River, Cooke said.

Late Thursday, Memphis police sent an alert asking parents to call if they weren't able to find their children and to question their children if they came home with wet clothing.
