An elderly couple died in the Proctorville blaze.

Illegal fireworks may have sparked a fire that killed an elderly couple in Ohio.

The fire that claimed the two people in their 70s was reported about 1:30 a.m. Saturday, according to WCHS.

Investigators said witnesses called 911 to report the Proctorville home was on fire. They said the man came outside of the home, but went back inside to try to rescue his wife, who was bedridden, the station reported.

Firefighters believe hot embers fell into combustible material next to the back of the residence. Debris from the fireworks was found in the neighborhood.
