JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — A fire underneath New Jersey's historic Pulaski Skyway has sent smoke billowing over the aging structure that is in the midst of a two-year construction project.

It's unclear if the fire is related to the construction underway on the 82-year-old span. A spokesman for the state Department of Transportation says it's possible that sparks created by welding activity may have fallen onto the base and caused the fire.

The fire was located on the base of a bridge support. Flames engulfed wooden supports that provide a buffer around the base.

DOT spokesman Steve Schapiro says there's no structural damage to the bridge support.

Several firefighting boats are on the scene.
