An employee of a nearvy store pulled a resident from the burning home in Charlotte.

Sept. 09--One person died and another person was rescued Tuesday morning in a house fire in Charlotte's NoDa district.

The fire was reported about 6 a.m. at a duplex in the 400 block of Faison Avenue. That is between Brevard and Davidson streets in north Charlotte.

Charlotte fire Capt. Rob Brisley said crews found flames and smoke coming from the building when they arrived. Brisley said firefighters pulled a victim from the house, but Medic said attempts to revive that victim failed.

Another woman living in the duplex was rescued by an employee of nearby Brook's Sandwich Shop on North Brevard Street.

"When I pulled in, I saw flames coming from the rear window of the duplex," said Patricia Hilton, who lives in northern Union County. "I heard a woman screaming, 'There's a fire.' "

Hilton said she had been in a house fire before and knew what to do.

"I immediately got the front door open and went in to get the lady," she said. "There was a lot of smoke, but I got her out."
