Patient Killed, Responders Hurt in W.Va. Ambulance Wreck

The Marion County Rescue Squad ambulance and a Jeep collided.

A crash involving an ambulance in West Virginia has left a patient dead and four EMS providers injured.

The ambulance and a Jeep collided about 1 p.m. Monday in Marion County near Barrackville, according to WDTV.

The driver of the Jeep said he didn't hear the ambulance that was headed toward Fairmont. After the collision, the ambulance went through a guardrail, down an embankment and landed on its roof. 

A provider in the Marion County Rescue Squad ambulance was flown to a trauma center while three others were transported by ambulance. The four people in the Jeep were not hurt.

The investigation is continuing.

Just hours after the crash, Marion County Rescue Squad officials issued the following statement:

"Today, one of our ambulances was involved in an accident while transporting a patient. All four of the MCRS employees onboard were injured, with two being taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital and two to Fairmont Regional Medical Center.

The accident investigation is being conducted by the Marion County Sheriff's Department and the West Virginia State Police.

MCRS wishes to extend our heartfelt sympathies to all involved, as well as their families. We extend our appreciation to all who assisted at the scene, to include the Barrackville, Farmington and Fairmont Fire Departments, Monongalia EMS, Harrison and Taylor County Emergency Squads, Marion County Homeland Security Director Chris McIntire and HealthNet Aeromedical Services."
