BURTONSVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- WSSC says water has been restored to 13 customers on Peach Orchard Road in Burtonsville after a fire hydrant blew off a pipe there on Monday morning. Crews are replacing a fire hydrant that spewed water after it was used during a house fire.

WSSC has determined that the hydrant located in the 14900 block of Peach Orchard Road blew off a pipe connected to a 12-inch water main. Crews are investigating why the hydrant tore off the pipe. WSSC spokesperson Lyn Riggins said earlier that fire crews had a hose hooked up to the hydrant when it blew.

Muddy water threatened many homes a block and a half away from the scene of a house fire in the 2200 block of Kings House Road. One home did flood before the water was shut off. Firefighters say that one to two inches of water were in the basement of the unoccupied house.

Approximately 75 firefighters responded to fight the two-alarm house fire that started at approximately 1 a.m. They found heavy fire conditions there. They used a fire hydrant for water to fight the blaze in the 14900 block of Peach Orchard Road and later water started flowing out into the street, say fire officials.

We're told that one firefighter fell through the first floor of the house on Kings House Road to the basement. He was treated on the scene and is expected to recover.

The fire is now out.

All of the occupants escaped uninjured after the smoke alarms alerted them to the blaze, say fire officials. A family cat is missing.

The fire started in the basement and was caused by the wood stove, say fire officials. The damage is estimated to be approximately $800,000.
