March 23--FORT WORTH -- A motorist faces a possible driving while intoxicated charge in connection with a Monday morning crash on Interstate 35W that injured three Fort Worth firefighters, police said.
The wreck also involved a patrol car, which was unoccupied at the time of the wreck.
Police identified the suspect as Armando O. Rodriguez, 26, of Midlothian who was in a Fort Worth jail on Monday afternoon. His bail amount was not available.
Rodriguez faces a charge of DWI and other charges pending the results of his blood tests, said police department spokeswoman Officer Natosha Tucker in a Monday email. He also was arrested on traffic violations of failure to vacate (lane) and failure to control speed to avoid a collision.
The firefighters' injuries were not considered life-threatening. They were taken to a local hospital where they were treated and released shortly after the crash, fire officials said.
The accident was reported shortly before 4 a.m. Monday on Interstate 35W at Golden Triangle Boulevard in far north Fort Worth.
Firefighters and police had responded to a separate traffic accident at the scene involving two cars, and a fire truck was attempting to clear the scene, fire officials said Monday.
A pickup slammed into the unoccupied patrol car, which was then shoved into the fire truck, said fire Battalion Chief Richard Harrison in a news release.
The pickup ended on its side and the driver was treated at the scene.
MedStar took the three firefighters to a local hospital.
Police continued to investigate.
