Pa. Fire Police Capt., 95, Suffers LODD

Capt. John J. Doster fell ill while directing traffic at a warehouse fire and died more than a month later. He was a firefighter for 82 years.

A 95-year-old Pennsylvania fire police captain has died more than a month after he fell ill while directing traffic in the bitter cold at a two-alarm warehouse fire on Feb. 25. He had served as a volunteer firefighter for 82 years.

According to a report from the U.S. Fire Administration, USFA, Fire Police Captain John J. Doster, who served with the Edgely Fire Company No. 10, in Levittown, was on the fire scene in Hulmeville Borough which closed much of area’s main streets for fire operations. Doster complained of not feeling well at the scene and departed for home in Levittown.

Within a few hours, Doster’s condition worsened and he was transported to the hospital for treatment. He died peacefully in his sleep on April 2 at St. Mary’s Medical Center. USFA lists his cause of death as stress/overexertion while providing scene safety.

According to his obituary, Doster, a life-long Levittown resident served as a past chief, a past president and was a lifetime member of the Edgely Fire Company No. 10
He was also an Army veteran of WWII and a recipient of the Purple Heart, Bronze and Silver Star and was the recipient of Chapel Four Chaplains Award.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend is viewing Thursday eve, April 9, from 5:00 to 9:00 PM at the Edgely Fire Company #10, 1200 Edgely Avenue, Levittown, Pa. and again Friday morning from 10 to 11 AM, followed by his service at 11 AM. Interment at Sunset Memorial Park.
