In firehouses across the country, there are random moments when firefighters stop and reflect on the sacrifice that their brothers and sisters made on 9-11. Almost 14 years later, 9-11 memories are still raw for many.
As a gesture of those who selflessly gave their lives that day, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) and Firehouse are again partnering for the 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb. It will be held at the Hilton Baltimore and begin at 10 a.m.
This is the fourth consecutive year the climb has been held in conjunction with Firehouse Expo, which this year is being held July 14 – 18 at the Baltimore Convention Center. Proceeds from a $30 registration helps the NFFF create and maintain programs that support fire service survivors.
What makes the climb so special is that firefighters from across the nation join together by climbing the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. The climb symbolically completes their heroic journey to save others. At past shows, both individuals and multiple teams from fire stations have put on their turnout gear to give a few hours of their time to commiserate with others in the fire service and climb in solidarity. It’s not unusual to see attendees of the show and local residents support those climbing with applause each time they ring the bell before they head for another flight of stairs.
Matt Tobia, who was a captain with Anne Arundel County Fire when he climbed, said it best: "There's a lot of camaraderie at these climbs, and a great audience. Except for responders, I think the memories of 9/11 sacrifices are fading. But, we won't let that happen."
