Hartford firefighters will be getting adding flame-retardant hoods to their PPE this summer.
The hoods were part of a directive issued by safety inspectors at Conn-OSHA following the death of Kevin Bell.
While the lack of a hood wasn't cited in Bells death, Hartford is the only department in the state that doesn't mandate firefighters to wear the gear, NBCConnecticut.com reports.
Right now, firefighters are trying different models.
"We're going to have them fill out evaluations as to the comfort of the hood, how it helped them, what their dislikes were," Interim Assistant Chief Scott Brady told the television station.
Once the department selects the gear they are going to use, additional training is planned for the firefighters to use them safely.
