A longtime New Jersey firefighter's last duty was to drive the apparatus in the annual Memorial Day parade.

Thomas Miserendino, 71, fell ill May 25 after the parade as he was preparing to participate with others from Beachwood Vol. Fire Company #1 in an event saluting veterans.

Miserendino was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for a cardiac issue. He was released the following day. However, hours later he suffered an apparent heart attack and was rushed back to the facility.

He died on June 4.
