Air National Guard Fire Capt. Alan Hicks fell ill at a fire scene hours earlier.

Crews are mourning the loss of Air National Guard Fire Capt. Alan Hicks after he passed away at the station Monday morning.

Hicks, 44, and another firefighter from Station 27 responded with a tanker to a house fire in Stanley County Sunday night.

After crews evacuated the home, he reported that he was nauseous, local television station WBTV reported.

Crews found his body in a bedroom and an official told WSOC that they believe he died of a heart attack.
