Several Hurt in Explosion at Fla. High-Rise

Firefighters had to climb the stairs to the top of the Sunny Isles Beach building to evaluate the situation.

A gas leak touched off an explosion at a Sunny Isles Beach high-rise Friday.

Officials said seven people, including two firefighters, were injured at the condominium complex on Collins Avenue and 174th Street.

"There was an explosion at the top of the building," Sunny Isles Beach Police Sgt. Brian Schnell told local television station WSVN.com.

The explosion damaged the cables on the building's elevators and trapped two people and forced firefighters to walk up to the roof to evaluate the damage.

"When I turned, I saw (the concrete) was coming down," a witness told the TV station. "I see people coming out (and within) two minutes, police were here. That was crazy."
