Pa. Chief Hurt in Crash Responding to Incident

Blandon Chief Daniel Miller and the other driver were transported for treatment.

The Blandon Fire Company chief was injured along with another driver Wednesday when a fire company vehicle collided with a pickup truck on Route 222 in Ontelaunee Township while responding to an earlier crash, police said.

Chief Daniel Miller, 51, had his lights and siren on as he drove the large pickup truck northbound on Allentown Pike, which is Route 222 Business, about 6:40 a.m. Wednesday. The truck, which was marked with fire company decals, collided with a smaller pickup whose driver pulled onto the road from Park Road, police said.

Police said witnesses told them Miller had a green signal.

The impact sent Miller's truck onto its side. Miller was freed by rescue workers and taken to Reading Hospital along with the other driver, Ryan Constein, 23, of Laureldale, police said. Both were treated at the hospital, a spokeswoman said.

Police closed the northbound lane of Route 222 at Park Road for about an hour until the vehicles were removed.

Muhlenberg Township police investigated the crash even though it happened in the Northern Berks Regional police coverage area. Northern Berks officers were on two other calls that had come in about the same time 10 minutes earlier.

One of them was a rear-end crash on Route 222 southbound between Tamarack Boulevard and Route 73 in Maidencreek Township.

A large truck driven by William Groff, 49, of Lancaster rear-ended a tractor-trailer driven by John B. Moyer III, 58, of Maxatawny Township, police said.

Both drivers were taken by ambulance to area hospitals for treatment of minor injuries, police said. The southbound lane was closed for about an hour.

Information on their medical conditions could not be obtained.
