A Bensalem firefighter who was injured Saturday after he fell from a roof while battling a house blaze was in good condition Tuesday.
Nottingham Fire Company Volunteer Nick Weaver fell from a third-story roof of a home on the 1100 block of Tennis Avenue in Bensalem on Saturday.
In a Facebook post Sunday, Bensalem Fire Rescue said Weaver was ventilating the roof of the house when he fell about 30 to 35 feet. The Bensalem Police Department, in a late Saturday afternoon Facebook post, said Weaver sustained injuries to his face, neck and back.
Weaver, 26, works as a firefighter with Bensalem Fire Rescue, but at the time was off-duty and went to the scene as a volunteer with the Nottingham Fire Company.
After his fall, he was taken by medics to Aria Health's Torresdale hospital in Northeast Philadelphia, but was later transferred to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Center City, where a spokeswoman said Tuesday that he was in good condition.
It was about 9:10 a.m. Saturday when Bensalem police and multiple Bensalem fire companies responded to the house fire. The police department, in its statement, said the lone occupant in the house was able to get out safely "suffering only minor burns to both feet" and was taken to Aria-Torresdale for treatment.
Police said a second volunteer firefighter was also taken to the hospital "for observation after experiencing tightness in his chest while at the fire scene."
A call to Bensalem Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Robert Sponheimer on Tuesday was not immediately returned.
Sponheimer on Monday told the Bucks County Courier Times that an investigation determined the fire was caused by "careless smoking" in a second-floor bedroom. He said no working smoke alarms were found in the house.
Weaver fell from the roof of the house onto a porch roof and then to the ground, Sponheimer told the Courier Times.
The second volunteer firefighter was with the Union Fire Company and has been released from the hospital, Sponheimer told the newspaper.
