A firefighter who worked with multiple emergency agencies was killed after a three-car crash in Chester County on Thursday, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The crash happened about 4:40 p.m. on the 1700 block of S.C. 97, according to Lance Cpl. Bill Rhyne, a spokesman for the Highway Patrol.

A 2012 Dodge pickup was traveling north on S.C. 97 when the driver, “for unknown reasons,” began drifting into the oncoming lane, Rhyne said. The Dodge sideswiped a southbound Chevrolet van and struck a southbound 2006 Toyota pickup head-on.

The driver of the Toyota, 22-year-old Adam Ryan Swygart, of Josies Road in Blackstock, was pronounced dead at the scene from blunt force trauma, Chester County Coroner Terry Tinker said.

The driver of the Toyota was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene, Rhyne said. The driver of the Dodge pickup, a 40-year-old Chester man, was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured. The driver of the Chevrolet van, a 62-year-old Lugoff man, was wearing a seat belt and was injured. He was taken to Chester Regional Medical Center.

No charges have been filed, and the crash remains under investigation.

Swygart was a member of the Chester Fire Department, Tinker said. He was also a member of the South Chester Fire Department, Blackstock Fire Department and Chester Rescue Squad.
