NORTH KINGSTOWN — A fire burned a man, injured seven firefighters and caused an estimated $150,000 in damage to a Saunderstown home on Friday afternoon, authorities said.

Firefighters went to 15 Rosehill Rd. at about 11:45 a.m. and found a man outside the home suffering from burns, said Fire Chief Scott Kittelle.

Firefighters saw flames on the first floor extending to the second and third floor of the old home with balloon-frame construction, Kittelle said.

The homeowner, who had been burned when he attempted to extinguish the fire, was treated at the scene, Kittelle said.

Seven firefighters, six from North Kingstown and one from Warwick, were transported to the hospital for "heat exhaustion, sprains and strains," said Kittelle, who estimated that fire had destroyed about 40 percent of the home with about $150,000 in damage to the house. The house, home to one person, is salvageable but not inhabitable, he said.

The cause of the fire "appears accidental," said Kittelle, who did not provide additional detail. An investigation of the fire continues, he said.
