KS Fire Capt. Killed as Tanker Rolls

Hoyt Rural Fire District #3 Capt. Michael Schultz, 47, was on his way to a parade when the rig blew a tire.

A Kansas firefighter was killed and another injured when their tanker rolled over after it blew a tire.

Hoyt Rural Fire District #3 Capt. Michael Schultz, 47, the driver, was killed in the 5 p.m. crash Wednesday.

His passenger, Randy Smith, 36, was transported to a hospital for injuries.

The firefighters were on the way to the Jackson County Fair parade when the rig blew a tire. It crossed the median from the northbound to the southbound lanes and rolled a couple times, ending up in the west ditch.

Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse spoke of how the horrific crash changed the mood at the parade where the firefighters were headed.

"We at the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office honor both of these men for their unselfish sacrifice and service to their community here in Jackson County.Our prayers and thoughts go out to the Schultz family during this horrible loss, and pray for the speedy recovery of Firefighter Randy Smith," he said in a statement.
