PORTSMOUTH — Firefighters rescued a woman and two dogs from a burning home early Thursday morning, when the woman was transported by ambulance to Portsmouth Regional Hospital for smoke inhalation, said Fire Chief Steve Achilles.

The fire was reported at 2:11 a.m. and firefighters arrived on scene five minutes later to find an attached garage at 110 Leslie Drive on fire, said the chief. Heavy fire and smoke from the garage was extending to the one-story, wood-frame home where the resident was reported to be inside, according to Achilles.

Leslie Drive is a neighborhood located between Maplewood Avenue and Market Street.

Firefighters entered the home "under fire and smoke condition" to rescue the woman and dogs while water was sprayed in the area to protect the rescue, Achilles said.

Assisting at the scene were firefighters from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Rye and Kittery, Maine. Two ambulances, a tower truck and two engines from Portsmouth responded, Achilles said. Off-duty firefighters were called in for station coverage.

The one-alarm fire was declared under control at 3:42 a.m. and the cause is under investigation, Achilles said. The main home, owned by Lorine Bolduc, had limited fire damage, while the garage was significantly damaged, Achilles said.
