NE Firefighter Suffers Fatal Heart Attack, Third LODD in 18 Months for Dept.

Sept. 13, 2016
Lowell Satterwhite is the third line of duty death in less two years for the Dakota City Fire Department.

Dakota City firefighters are mourning the loss of firefighter who suffered a fatal heart attack Sunday. The department has lost two other members in the line of duty in less than two years.

Lowell Satterwhite, 67, suffered a heart attack just after midnight, about 12 hours after he responded to a medical emergency.

"The community is a better place now for Lowell being a volunteer for so many years," Dakota City Fire Chief Clint Rasmussen told the Sioux City Journal. "He was always there when we needed him, any time of day."

Satterwhite was the longest serving member of the department, having put in 41 years.

He worked full-time at the city's maintenance shop.

In April 2015, Andrew "Andy" Zalme collapsed and died after battling a vehicle fire.

Capt. Eric Speck, 38, died four days after he suffered heart attack following an emergency call.

"The last two were very hard, losing Andy and Eric," Rasmussen told the newspaper. "Now losing Lowell is another shock to the fire department and this community. But we’ll come together and will be stronger together for it."
