Wiscasset residents backed their volunteer firefighters at the polls yesterday, but it wasn't a budget levy or fire tax.
After the board of selectmen told firefighters they could no longer wash their personal vehicles at the fire station earlier this year, firefighters rallied the community for support.
In April, firefighters were told washing their vehicles was a violation of the town's policy on the use of town equipment, according to The Lincoln County News.
Fire Chief T.J. Merry told the newspaper that the practice kept volunteers at the station and helped build camaraderie.
Wiscasset firefighters started a petition in September the board decided to hold a vote during the election.
The vote passed by 2-to-1 margin.
