OH Union Wants Fire Officers to Carry Guns

Dec. 8, 2016
The union for Youngstown firefighters wants captains to be armed and requested body armor for all crews.

Union officials are asking Youngstown officials to consider allowing crews to carry firearms just days after a firefighter was shot.

The Youngstown Professional Firefighter's Association asked that captains be allowed arm themselves for the safety of crews. A request for body armor was also made.

Nathaniel Pinkard, chairman of the City Council Safety Committee, said he would begin the discussion with council, according to WFMJ.

This comes after Paul Lutton suffered a gunshot wound Monday night while driving Engine 7's apparatus.

A second bullet went through firefighter Dwayne Montgomery's coat, but he was uninjured.

Lutton was released from the hospital and is home recovering.

Police said they are still looking for the shooter.
