Firefighter, Deputy Injured in Crashes on Snowy MI Road

Dec. 15, 2016
A Grand Traverse Rural Fire captain was struck at a crash involving a deputy in whiteout conditions.

A firefighter was struck while working at a crash involving a sheriff's deputy in Grand Traverse County Wednesday.

Blowing snow caused whiteout conditions when a driver crashed head-on into Grand Traverse County sheriff's deputy's patrol car on M-72.

Firefighters used extrication tools to free the deputy from his vehicle, Grand Traverse Rural Fire Chief Theo Weber told the Record Eagle.

Fire Capt. Tim Arbenowske was struck in a secondary accident.

"He is in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery," Weber said.

A second patrol car and a fire apparatus were also struck and damaged.

The apparatus remains in service, but sustained serious damage.
