Firefighter Injured at NY House Fire

Feb. 5, 2017
The condition of the firefighter is not know and firefighters used a defensive attack on the fire.

Firefighters responded to the scene of a blaze on Route 20 in the Schoharie County town of Esperance Friday night.

The one occupant inside was able to flee the fire, reported at 7:30 p.m., and one firefighter was taken to Albany Medical Center for an undisclosed reason, according to Sheriff Anthony Desmond and Montgomery County Fire Coordinator Dale Furman, who was at the scene.

The name of the firefighter, who was not inside the house, and his company were not released.

The extent of the damage to the house, which has a tin roof, was not immediately known but Desmond and Furman said the fight was in a "defensive mode."

Several fire companies were at the scene — west of the village of Esperance — or on standby, including Esperance, Carlisle, Schoharie and Central Bridge.

The highway was closed in both directions for a time.

Contacted Saturday, Desmond did not have further information on the fire.

A fire in Carlisle last Saturday, not far from the location and also on Route 20, claimed the lives of two occupants in their 80s.

Also Friday, an afternoon fire on Hyde Street, Saratoga Springs, resulted in five people getting emergency aid from Northeastern New York Chapter of the American Red Cross volunteers. The Red Cross provided financial assistance for necessities such as shelter, food and clothing.
