A Lowell house fire killed a boy and injured two residents and one firefighter this morning.

A 3-year-old boy died following a large house fire early this morning in Mass.

Two Lowell residents and one firefighter were injured in the fire as well; they remain hospitalized.

The fire, on Parker Street, was reported at around 7 a.m. this morning, CBS reported.

Officials confirmed that the young child's death was a result of the fire at a press conference this morning.

Firefighters had a difficult time getting to the boy, who was trapped behind heavy flames in a back room.

“It’s a very difficult day for our firefighters, some of whom have young children themselves,” said Lowell Fire Chief Jeff Winward said. “It’s a difficult day for all of us.

The cause of the fire is reportedly still unknown.

The state fire marshal’s office said it is too early to determine whether the home had working smoke detectors.

Ten residents lived in the building, which had three apartments.
