One person may be dead after a four-alarm fire in Oakland destroyed a large apartment building.

Oakland firefighters are battling a four-alarm structure fire and making multiple rescues this morning from the occupied apartment building.

Unconfirmed reports from ABC7 News say that one person may have died in the blaze. Firefighter thought they saw a body on the third floor, but there has been no official confirmation of the death.

The television station reported that seven people were rescued and as many as 60 people may have lived in the building.

The fire was reported at about 6 a.m. and, according to Oakland Fire Department’s Twitter account, it came in as a three-alarm working structure fire.

Firefighters on the scene reported heavy fire on the A side of the building with fire on multiple floors and multiple rescues being made.

The fire quickly went to four alarms and not long later, the order to evacuate the building was made because the roof and floors had been compromised by the raging fire, according to the department’s Twitter account.

Hours later, firefighters continued with suppression efforts.
