May 18--A speeding car jumped the sidewalk and crashed into pedestrians in Times Square on Thursday, killing one person and injuring at least a dozen others.
CBS reports that New York City police said the incident did not appear to be an act of terrorism.
A witness told Reuters that one person on the scene was covered with a bloodstained blanket after a collision that occurred at around noon and ended with the vehicle propped up on two wheels on the corner of 45th St. and Broadway right in the heart of the Manhattan theater district and tourist destination.
The driver of the red Honda sedan was removed from the vehicle, according to CBS, and television footage showed police officers restraining a man in a dark T-shirt and placing him in a police car.
Witnesses said the motorist had driven against traffic and onto the sidewalk, striking pedestrians.
"Everybody was just running, everyone was concerned for their lives," a witness told CBS.
The NYPD says the wreck was a possible DWI. The driver, a 26-year-old man from the Bronx, has two prior DWIs, according to the NYPD. He has been taken into custody.
