Few Details Revealed in Death of NJ Fire Chief

An investigation is underway after the death of Perth Amboy chief Abraham Pitre on Saturday night.

June 18--Perth Amboy Fire Chief Abraham Pitre died suddenly on Saturday night, but little else was revealed in a release by the city's mayor.

NJ.com reports that Perth Amboy Mayor Wilda Diaz on Sunday afternoon announced the death of the 44-year-old Pitre, who was the city's first fire chief of Hispanic descent and was a member of the department for 24 years.

Diaz called the chief's death "sudden" and said the "circumstances of the incident remain under investigation by the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office."

No additional information is available at this time.

"We ask that you keep Abraham Pitre's loved ones and co-workers in your thoughts and prayers as we mourn this devastating loss," the mayor wrote.

Pitre, who lived in Perth Amboy with his wife and three children, was remembered in a post on the department's Facebook page.

"As you may be aware we suffered a huge loss yesterday, with the untimely passing of our Chief Abraham Pitre. We will honor his memory by continuing to uphold our solemn oath to serve and protect, remembering those that lay the path to our future.

"May you rest in peace Chief. Know the love, respect & loyalty we have for you. We ask everyone to lift up Chief Pitre & his family in prayer as we grieve together through this difficult time."
