CO Dept. Mourning Loss of Engineer to Cancer

Michael Freeman, South Metro Fire Rescue's most senior member, lost his battle with cancer Sunday.

July 17--South Metro Fire Rescue in Centennial, CO, is mourning the loss of its most senior member two months after he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor.

Engineer Michael Freeman died "peacefully" at his home on Sunday, according to a post on South Metro Fire Rescue's Facebook page. SMFR said in the post that it is treating Freeman's passing as a line of duty death.

Freeman, whose age was not mentioned, began his career in fire service in 1974 with the Cherry Hills Fire Department and held badge number 74-1 with SMFR to honor his status as its senior member.

"SMFR expresses our deepest condolences and sympathy to the Freeman family during this difficult time," the post read.
