New Orleans firefighter Gregory Howard was an innocent bystander when he was shot at a charity basketball tournament.

A New Orleans firefighter was killed in a shooting early Saturday morning outside the Mynt nightclub, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office said.

Capt. Chris Harris said 37-year-old Gregory Howard was a bystander in the incident. Howard was in town for a basketball tournament for law enforcement and first responders.

A group of people had confronted the club DJ with complaints about the music and was kicked out, Harris said. Outside, at least two shooters fired toward a crowd in the 4200 block of Hacks Cross between Winchester and Shelby Drive.

No arrests had been made and the investigation was ongoing.
