Police Official: Looters Shot at Houston FFs

Aug. 29, 2017
A police union official says firefighters and officers came under fire Monday during rescue efforts.

Houston firefighters and police conducting search and rescue operations in the wake of Hurricane Harvey came under gunfire from looters, a police union official said.

The Daily Caller reports that a group of firefighters who were helping people escape the flooding Monday afternoon were targeted during their efforts.

"We had firefighters out there helping people, and looters started firing on them," police officer Joe Gamaldi told The Daily Caller on Tuesday. "We sent officers down there on a code 1 (which means as fast as you can) to assist, and they too came under fire."

Gamaldi said no one was injured in the incident at the intersection of Tidwell and Mesa just north of the city's downtown area.

"This was absolutely the most despicable and disgusting thing that you could imagine," Gamaldi said. "That our officers had to stop what they were doing, high-water rescues and saving lives, to deal with looters firing at our officers and firefighters.

"If you are caught (looting), you will go to jail and there will be severe consequences."
