A Poughkeepsie firefighter suffered minor injuries after he was struck by a passing vehicle while retrieving medical gear from an apparatus Friday.

Firefighters were called to an unknown medical emergency around 3:00 p.m. when firefighter John Farmer was struck by a passing Honda Civic as he was getting equipment from a pumper.

Farmer suffered injuries to his lower back and was taken to the hospital for evaluation, the Poughkeepsie Journal reports.

The driver received a summons for illegally passing an emergency vehicle.

"We would just ask that people pay close attention to the emergency equipment," Fire Chief Mark Johnson said, "...and the laws that require motorists to give a wide berth to emergency vehicles while they’re operating."
