TX Man Charged with Impersonating Fire Marshal During Hurricane

David Matthews was wearing a peace officer badge when he told Jefferson firefighters he could help them on calls.

A Spring man who responded to emergency calls near Labelle during Hurricane Harvey is accused of pretending to be a fire marshal and peace officer.

He was indicted Wednesday on two counts of impersonating a public servant, the second time he's been arrested on that charge.

David Roy Matthews, who was wearing a Texas Peace Officer badge, told volunteer firefighters at the Jefferson Fire Station #1 on Sept. 6 that he was stranded in the area and could help with emergency calls, according to an affidavit from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

He was wearing a holstered firearm and told volunteer firefighters that he worked for the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable, and that he was a fire marshal for the Harris County Fire Department Station 10, the affidavit alleged.

While impersonating an officer, Matthews allegedly responded to calls with the chief and operated fire trucks and other vehicles.

He was arrested on Sept. 7 on a charge of impersonating a public servant; according to the affidavit, he had previously been arrested in Louisiana on the same charge.

If convicted of the third degree felony charges, he faces up to ten years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 for each charge.
