Clackamas Fire Chief Bill Conway was shopping with his wife Saturday when a man stopped breathing.

Firefighters know that sometimes life or death can hinge on the right person being in the right place at the right time.

That was the case for Clackamas Fire District #1 Division Chief Bill Conway last weekend while he was shopping for groceries with his wife.

According to a district release, Conway and his wife were at the Grocery Outlet on SE McLoughlin Blvd. in Oak Grove last Saturday when the chief heard someone fall to the ground nearby. Store employees immediately called 911 while Conway rushed over the assess the patient, finding the man unconscious and not breathing.

Conway, who also serves as the Fire District's EMS Chief, began chest compressions while Clackamas firefighters and paramedics were en route. The patient was defibrillated twice and regained a pulse before being transported to a local hospital, and the release says he's doing well.

The Fire District says Conway "has been instrumental in helping first responders and citizens learn hands-only CPR and the use of Automatic External Defibrillators (AED)." Over 43,000 local students and citizens have learned hands-only CPR under Conway's leadership in the district, according to the release.
