Off-Duty MD Chief Used Fire Vehicle to Evade Police

Deputies gave chase when Silver Hill Fire Chief Matthew Reginald Fowler fled from them in a fire department SUV.

An off-duty fire chief from Prince George's County faces a slew of charges after he fled from police Tuesday.

Deputies from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office were called to a Waldorf home for a man who was threatening to slash the tires on his girlfriend's vehicle just before 5 a.m.

According to the sheriff's office, Matthew Reginald Fowler, 49, was found inside a silver pickup truck at the location.

It was initially reported that Fowler, who is the fire chief of the Silver Hill Volunteer Fire Department, was in a vehicle with fire department markings, but Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department spokesman Mark Brady later said that report was incorrect. It was his personal vehicle.

When deputies initiated a traffic stop, Fowler fled and led them on a pursuit that was called off when he entered Prince George's County.

Just after 6 a.m., deputies were called back to the Waldorf home because Fowler had returned.

Fowler fled the scene in an emergency vehicle from Silver Hill Fire Department. He picked up the vehicle from the fire station after fleeing from deputies earlier, according to Brady.

Deputies said Fowler pulled over a short time later and he was taken into custody.

Fowler was charged with 22 traffic violations, including negligent driving and reckless driving.
