Brasher-Winthrop firefighter David E. Carr responded to a major fire Friday night and died Saturday.

A longtime Brasher-Winthrop volunteer firefighter died after responding to major blaze Friday night.

David E. Carr, 62, responded to a fire at Curran Renewable Energy and worked the scene for hours, according to a post on the Brasher-Winthrop Volunteer Fire Department Facebook page. They returned to the station where he helped clean up equipment before going home.

Carr collapsed while at home late Saturday morning and later died at Massena Memorial Hospital.

Carr joined the fire service in 1979 and became a member of the Brasher-Winthrop Volunteer Fire Department in 1998. The former rescue squad chief was committed to serving his community, fire officials said.

“Every call that went out, he was one of those guys we always depended on and he has always been there,” fire department president Randy Thayer told the Watertown Daily Times. “He was very dependable, very well-trained. He took every training and a lot of them he took twice.”

Carr retired from Alcoa a few years ago, the newspaper reports.

“He just did things the right way. He was a very solid, dependable part of our department,” Thayer added. “He was here all the time. If we needed a truck worked on or to find out what was wrong with a piece of equipment, you did not have to tell him twice, he just did it."

A funeral will be held Friday at St. Patrick's Church in Brasher at 2 p.m.
