Norfolk Fire and Rescue officials said the firefighter suffered a life-changing injury when glass went into his eye.

A firefighter suffered an serious eye injury after someone threw a rock at firefighters who were called to several intentionally set fires Sunday in Thetford.

The Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service firefighters were dousing a small fire around 9:30 p.m. when a rock was launched towards the crew. It broke a window and the glass went into the firefighter's eye.

“The firefighter that was in the back of the vehicle had a piece of glass go into his eye which could have potentially finished his career," Station Manager Derek Sim told the Eastern Daily Press

Firefighters were able to remove the glass and he was taken to the hospital.

“Not only would it have affected his current employment but it could have affected any further employment due to possibly suffering a life-changing injury," Sim told the newspaper.

Sim said the fire apparatus will be out of service until it can be repaired.
