Brazoria Capt. Dene Barber fell ill Wednesday during a structure fire and later died at a hospital.

A captain with a fire department in a town south of Houston died this week after falling ill while working a structure fire.

The Brazoria Fire Department said in a press release that Capt. Dene Barber fell ill Wednesday night after helping to douse an apartment fire and died following transport to a hospital.

Brazoria firefighters arrived on scene at about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday at the Brazoria Manor Apartments and found smoke showing from the second floor. After crews made entry and extinguished the fire, Capt. Barber exited and complained of not feeling well.

Barber, who was a member of the department for over seven years, was examined by West Brazos EMS on scene and taken to CHL St. Luke's Hospital, where he later died.

"It is sad to announce with a broken heart the Line of Duty Death of Fire Captain Dene Barber," the City of Brazoria said on its Facebook page. "Capt Barber served his department and the City of Brazoria proudly and passed away of a possible heart attack while responding to a fire call in late evening of December 14."

According to the Brazoria Fire Department's Facebook page, visitation will be held Saturday from 6-8 p.m. at Dignity Memorial Restwood Funeral Home and funeral services are planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Brazoria.
