Two Leominster firefighters called mayday when they were entrapped on the third floor by heavy fire at an apartment building early Sunday morning.

According to Boston 25 News, a rapid intervention team was called in to assist with rescuing the firefighters, but were not needed. The firefighters were able to free themselves.

The distress call came just after an order to evacuate the building was ordered as fire ripped through the upper two floors of the three-story apartment building, according to the television station

In all, 15 people, including eight children, were displaced by the two-alarm fire in the building on Mechanic Street.

No one was injured in the blaze, although fire officials say several pets perished, according to the report.

Fire heavily damaged the second and third floors and the first floor sustained serious water damage, the televisions station reported. The residents who escaped the fire possessed only what they were wearing when the 2 am fire broke out.

Local and state authorities, along with the Red Cross are helping the displaced residents and The Salvation Army also provided vouchers for various needs, the TV station reported.
