A captain with the Tempe Fire Department was shot in the head and died after a traffic incident in the Old Town section of Scottsdale early Sunday morning.

According to Tucson News Now, the Scottsdale police reported that the off-duty fire captain, Kyle Brayer, 34, was shot at around 2:30 a.m. near Scottsdale Fashion Square.

Brayer got out of the cart and approached the red Scion coupe when he was shot. The fire captain was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died, according to reports.

According to NBC News 12, the shooting suspect, Hezron Parks, 21,  turned himself in after an extensive manhunt following the shooting.

Tempe Mayor Mark Mitchell issued a statement saying that Brayer was a valued member of the city’s fire medical rescue team and that he was lost “to an act of senseless violence.

“My thoughts go to his family, friends and fellow firefighters,” Mitchell’s statement read.

The Glendale firefighters also issued a statement announcing the loss of the 10-year veteran to the Tempe team.

“Kyle was also a United State Marines veteran and a great friend to many,” the statement read. “He was taken from us too soon by a senseless act of random violence.”
