CA Apartment Fire Leaves Firefighter with Injuries

Unattended cooking caused a fire that damaged five apartments in a Martinez building.

A fire broke out at an apartment building early Sunday in Martinez after a resident left a stove unattended, injuring one firefighter and damaging five apartments, authorities said.

Dispatchers received a call about 4:15 a.m. of a fire that started in one unit of an eight-unit town house building on the 400 block of Eastgate Lane, said Capt. Lisa Martinez of Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.

The blaze was started by a resident who was cooking and left the stove unattended, Martinez said.

“It’s quite common,” Martinez said. “A lot of the fires that we go to are usually from unattended cooking. People put the pot on and forget about it.”

The blaze was knocked down within five minutes of firefighters arriving on scene, Martinez said.

One firefighter, who was not identified, was injured and transported to the hospital for treatment. The extent of his injuries were not disclosed. No other injuries were reported.

Residents were displaced from five of the units.
