Twenty Overdoses Prompts MA Chief to Send Out Warning

Feb. 19, 2018
Chief Jeffrey Winward told Lowell-area residents to check on loved ones after crews responded to 20 overdoes in three days.

Authorities are concerned that deadly batches of heroin or fentanyl are being sold in the Greater Lowell area and caused 20 overdoses in a span of three days.

Lowell Fire Chief Jeffrey Winward said there have been 20 overdoses in the region since Friday. He told the Lowell Sun none of the overdoses were fatal. First responders were able to administer Narcan to the overdose victims, the fire chief told the newspaper.

While authorities said the surge in overdoses is due to opioids, the Lowell Sun said officials in Lowell are concerned heroin or fentanyl is the cause.

"We've seen 20 overdoses, many of whom were in respiratory arrest," the fire chief said on Sunday. He asked people to be vigilant and check on any loved ones suffering from addiction.

WCVB News reports there have been five opioid-related deaths in Lowell this year.
