Portland planned to train its firefighters with smoke Thursday.

But they also got fire when the smoke grenades dropped into the abandoned house set trash inside on fire.

Fire Chief Jim Leahey said the nine firefighters had the fire under control throughout the drill at the house on the corner of Fourth and Houston streets.

The drill was part of several planned by the department to sharpen firefighters' skills.

Ind. Fire Dept. Gives Up User Fee Money

Nov. 13--ANDERSON, Ind. -- The Anderson Fire Department will give up part of its ambulance user fee collections, set aside to maintain equipment and fire stations, to help pay for its salaries in the midst of a city budget crisis.

The City Council on Thursday approved an ordinance that allows the fire department to contribute $890,000 of its user fee money to the general fund, which can pay for firefighters' salaries.

Ind. FFs Replace Downtown Flag

Nov. 13--Old Glory got a boost Thursday from the Terre Haute Fire Department.

Firefighters went 75 feet into the air Thursday afternoon to replace an American flag that had gone missing from a tall flagpole atop the Star Building at Sixth and Ohio streets.

Calif. FFs Contain Lumber Yard Fire

ALBANY, Calif. --

Firefighters remained on the scene late Thursday evening of a massive lumber fire in Albany that broke out at a lumber yard near Point Isabel and the Richmond city line.

The flames could be seen for miles.

The fire broke out around 7:20 p.m.

8 Hurt As Car Hits Conn. Salon

MILFORD, Conn.

Police in Milford said eight people were injured when a car crashed into a nail salon Thursday afternoon.

Police said that at 3:15 Thursday afternoon, multiple 911 calls were received of a car that crashed into Sun Nails on Bridgeport Avenue in Milford.

Multiple units were dispatched and upon arriving, they discovered seven people were injured. Officials immediately began to triage the patients.

A mother and three children are dead.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. --

A mother and her three children were killed in an early-morning fire in Bridgeport Friday.

Firefighters were called to the P.T. Barnum complex at about 1 a.m.

The mother and her children were pulled from the burning building.

Conn. Officer Reprimanded for Cuffing Firefighter During Med. Call

Fire Damages Three Wis. Businesses

MADISON, Wis.

The Madison Fire Department said a morning fire Thursday damaged some businesses on the city's East Side.

Firefighters responded to a report of a fire at Lazybones Laundry & Storage Service in the 4300 block of Neptune Court just before 2 a.m. Thursday.

Upon arrival, firefighters saw smoke coming from the building. Crews conducted a search of the building and quickly extinguished the fire, according to Bernadette Galvez, public information officer at the Madison Fire Department.

Kan. FFs Rescue Crook From Vent

TOPEKA, Kan.
--

Topeka police said a man who was trying to rob a discount cigarette store got stuck in a vent and had to be rescued by firefighters. Police said the man was stuck in a ventilation pipe for about three hours early Thursday. He eventually managed to call his daughter, who called 911.

Firefighters found the man head down in a ventilation pipe and pulled him out. He was taken to a Topeka hospital and will be charged after he is released.

Police Lt Chuck Haggard said the burglar "wasn't very cat-like."

Cement Trucks Haul Water to N.D. Fire

Nov. 12--No one was injured Tuesday night when a fire destroyed an Oakes, N.D., convenience store, said Randy Burley, Oakes Fire Department chief.

Oakes firefighters arrived at Hwy #1 Fuel & Services, 909 S 7th. St., Oakes, shortly after 9:30 p.m., Tuesday, and were still at the scene at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Burley said.

The fire closed N.D. Highway 1 near Oakes for several hours.

Pa. Judge's Office Fire Bombed

McKEESPORT, Pa.

Authorities are investigating after a blaze erupted at the magistrate's office in McKeesport early Thursday morning.

According to authorities, someone threw a Molotov Cocktail into the O'Neil Boulevard building, causing the blaze.

Police said the fire bomb was thrown before Magistrate Eugene F. Riazzi and his workers showed up for work.

Riazzi said he sees hundreds of cases a month and can't help but feel like a target.

18-Wheeler Loaded With Asphalt Crashes into Calif. Home

PACIFICA --

It was a frightening scene in Pacifica Wednesday after a runaway gravel truck crashed into a house on a steep section of Manor Drive where crews were getting ready to do road work.

Manor Drive is one of the main routes into Pacifica, but the thoroughfare was blocked for most of the day and into the night after the devastating crash.

Fallen Florida Firefighter's Photo Falsely Linked to Molesting Story

Fallen Volusia County Firefighter John Curry's photo was used by an Australian blog.

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. --

A Volusia County firefighter was killed in a training accident. Now his widow says his memory is being disgraced by a website linking his picture to a horrible story.

The story is about an Australian firefighter accused of molesting children. But instead of using the suspect's picture, a website used a picture of John Curry, who died in Volusia County in 2007.

Grease Fire Damages Calif. Sushi Bar

Nov. 11--Agrease fire in the kitchen of a downtown Redwood City sushi restaurant forced the evacuation of several nearby businesses Tuesday afternoon, according to the Redwood City Fire Department.

The one-alarm fire was reported at 3:17 p.m. and extinguished within 10 minutes, causing minimal damage to the Blue Fin Sushi restaurant at 2327 Broadway, said Battalion Chief Stan Maupin.
