MD Firefighters Battle Vacant House Fire

Photos/Story By: Stephen Marquette

On August 17, 2000 firefighters in Prince George's County responded to 5702 Barker Place at 4 AM for a reported house fire.

On arrival units from Kentland, West Lanham Hills, Landover Hills and Glen Dale Volunteer Fire Departments found a vacant, split level home, with heavy fire in the basement.

Firefighters from Engine 301 advanced an attack line to the top of the rear stairs and attempted to knock the fire, which at that point was extending into the kitchen, unsuccessfully.

Engine 332 then advanced an attack line though the garage and into a basement door extinguishing the remainder of the fire.

Special service crews placed ladders, performed a search of the home, which was negative, and began ventilation and overhaul operations after the fire was knocked.

The seat of the fire was a storage area in the basement located on the corner of side 1 and 4. Units remained on the scene until shortly after 6 AM.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
