FDNY Blondes Have More Funds

Lt. Bill Gallagher and Tom Costa get bleached blond yesterday for charity - $1,000 a head for FDNY widows and orphans.

December 11, 2001 -- Five Rockaway firefighters showed a different kind of bravery yesterday - they fearlessly walked into Saks Fifth Avenue to have their hair dyed blond.

It was for a good cause - the store's tony Elizabeth Arden Red Door Salon and Spa donated $1,000 a head to the FDNY's Widows and Orphans Fund.

"It's like going in to fight a fire," said 20-year FDNY veteran Dennis McClean, 51. "You wouldn't want to do it alone.

Dan Donohue, 41, said, "My wife's going to have a shock when she sees I've gone from brunette to blond."

The firefighters from Engine 268 and Ladder 137 are hoping everyone at their Rockaway firehouse - known as "The Beach House" - will get involved in the fund-raiser, which was started in Chicago by stylist Mario Tricoci. It raised almost $1 million dollars there for the New York fund.

"The men at the firehouse are already looking forward to goofing on us when we get back," said Lt. Bill Gallagher, 43.

"And all 50 guys are ready to go blond."
