NO FEAR: Firefighter Patrick Brown (above, white shirt) in a daring 1991 rescue.

December 16, 2001 -- Captain Patrick Brown was a legend in the Fire Department - a superhero who performed countless daredevil rescues in his 23 years on the job.

So when his death was announced on the FDNY radio yesterday after his remains were found at ground zero, the radio dispatcher's voice quaked with uncharacteristic emotion.

The normally measured monotone couldn't help but let the enormous loss of Captain Brown show.

"I'm not surprised it was hard to announce it," said close friend Boris Kupermann, who taught karate to the blind with Brown.

"He was very well known because he always had something for everyone."

It's been 97 days since the veteran of Manhattan's Ladder Co. 3 rushed into the World Trade Center's north tower to try to rescue burn casualties trapped on the 40th floor.

Now, the family of the unmarried 48-year-old is finally able to put him to rest.

"It will make so much difference to his family having him and knowing where he is," said Kupermann.
