Nov. 20--Wednesday's tour bus crash on Interstate 90 was the largest mass-casualty event that Austin Fire Chief Dan Wilson has been to in his 25 years with the department.

Austin firefighters were called for mutual aid and were among the first on the scene, where two were killed and 21 were injured.

A goose got stuck Thursday when its leg became entangled in chicken wire on an island in the middle of Sacramento's Land Park duck pond.

Animal control officers called the fire department for help when they realized they needed a raft to get over to the goose.

Once it was freed, firefighters and animal control officers paddled back to shore with their injured feathered friend.

Consultants will be keeping an eye on Wauwatosa Fire Department's operations over the next several months.

The Common Council on Tuesday approved spending $65,000 on a review by International City/County Management Association, a professional organization for city managers, to see if any personnel or service changes could result in efficiencies within the department.

LONDONDERRY -- With the widening of Interstate 93 poised to become a major construction project in town over the next several years, Londonderry firefighters are spending the week preparing for trench cave-in rescues, one of the more dangerous and labor-intensive emergencies related to construction.

Six firefighters suffered non-life threatening injuries on Thursday morning while battling a fire on Dinah Court near Ravenwood Country Club in Donelson.

Emergency officials said the floor of the home fell through, trapping three firefighters at about 7:30 a.m. Firefighters on the scene rescued their co-workers and they were transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center.

One other firefighter was later transported. Two additional firefighters were treated and released from Summit Medical Center.

Nov. 18--An 18-year-old employee of the Valley View PetSmart was arrested Tuesday and charged with starting the weekend fire that caused an estimated $2 million in damage to the store.

Nov. 17--The Solon Springs Fire Commission took additional steps Thursday in closed session against former Solon Springs Fire Chief Mike Brostowitz.

"The committee decided the best thing to do was remove him from the department," said Gene Risler, secretary and treasurer for the commission, which represents both the village and town of Solon Springs.

Nov. 17--Every 22 seconds a fire department responds to a fire. Every 61 seconds a structure fire is reported.

Every 82 seconds a home structure fire is reported. Every two hours and 38 minutes a person dies as a result of a fire.

A local fire department official said safety is priority when dealing with fire.
