SC Firefighter in Critical Condition

TONY
WLTX - Columbia, SC

A firefighter injured in Saturday's blaze near Lake Murray remains in critical condition today.

Jeff Chavis is being treated at the Augusta Burn Center.

Chavis received his injuries while helping to put out a fire in the Winward Community. While trying to put out the blaze, a garage door engulfed in flames fell on Chavis. A neighbor helped pull him to safety.

Chavis suffered second and third degree burns on his face. He was immediately taken to Augusta for treatment.

Monday, his condition was downgraded to critical.

Lexington County Fire Services say they've been inundated with calls from people who want to offer help to Chavis and his family. If you'd like to give blood to help Chavis, or give financial assistance, here's what you need to do:

First, a donation to the American Red Cross will not help Chavis, since the facility he's being treated at receives their blood from the Shepard Community Blood Bank. You'll have a chance to donate to that center Thursday from 2p.m. until 7p.m. at the Lexington County Fire Training Facility.

For financial donations, a trust has been set up in the name of Jeffery V. Chavis at the Safe Federal Credit Union. You can donate at any one of their local branches, or give donations to Lexington Fire Services Headquarters at 212 South Lake Drive, Lexington, South Carolina, 29072.
