NY Firefighters, Cops Visit Israel

JERUSALEM (AP) -- New York police and firefighters, scarred by terrorism at home, on Tuesday visited the site of a double suicide bombing in Jerusalem.

The 12-member delegation laid flowers where two Palestinian bombers blew themselves up Dec. 1 at an outdoor mall in the center of the city, killing 15 people. Many of the visitors took part in rescue efforts after the Sept. 11 terror attacks at the World Trade Center.

The visitors, some in uniform, attracted the attention of lunchtime crowds. Gavi Friedson, 13, beamed as he held up an NYPD-style badge, a gift from one of the officers.

As Israeli police led a tour of downtown Jerusalem, pointing out the sites of recent Palestinian attacks, police Sgt. Rainer Kroll brushed off suggestions that the stroll was dangerous. ``We have lots of shootings in New York, too,'' he said. ``I just wish I was armed.''

Friedson, who recently moved to Israel from Florida, agreed. ``I did not move here so I'd be afraid. If I was afraid I'd be living in America,'' he said.

The officers are part of a group of firefighters, police and Pentagon officials visiting Israel on a one-week solidarity mission. On Monday, Israeli Tourism Minister Benny Elon awarded them certificates of heroism.
