New York, New York -- Six months to the day after probationary firefighter Richard Allen died saving lives at the World Trade Center, he was finally laid to rest.
"You're home now," his mother, Gail, said in a eulogy yesterday in Farmingdale, L.I.
The funeral capped off a horrible six months for the rookie's family. On Nov. 9, his family held a memorial service for Allen, 31, although his body had not been found. Three days later, American Airlines Flight 587 plowed into the ground across the street from their Rockaways home, killing all 260 people on board and five of their neighbors on the ground.
His mother, who was taking out the garbage at the time of the crash, ran inside screaming "get out" to her sleeping family.
Last week, Allen's remains were finally unearthed at Ground Zero. Allen was buried at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale.
More than 1,000 mourners including Mayor Bloomberg and Gov. Pataki yesterday gathered at St. Francis De Sales for the funeral service.
Also on Long Island yesterday, a funeral mass was held for NYPD Sgt. Michael Curtin at St. Sylvester Church in Medford.
